Handbag Price Index Sri Lanka 2026: What Branded Bags Actually Cost
Share
Last updated: 6 August 2026. Next scheduled update: November 2026.
There is no published reference for what branded handbags cost in Sri Lanka. Shoppers guess, sellers quote inconsistently, and the replica market fills the gap because it is the only part of the market with visible pricing. This index is our attempt to fix that. It is compiled from our own live retail stock and updated quarterly.
Summary
| Handbags in index | 124 |
| Price range | Rs 30,000 to Rs 140,000 |
| Median price | Rs 60,000 |
| Mean price | Rs 65,700 |
| Brands covered | 7 |
How Prices Are Distributed
The commonly held belief that a designer handbag in Sri Lanka means six figures is not borne out by the data. Just over half the market sits between Rs 50,000 and Rs 75,000, and only 7% of stock exceeds Rs 100,000.
| Price band | Bags | Share |
|---|---|---|
| Under Rs 50,000 | 24 | 19% |
| Rs 50,000 to Rs 74,999 | 64 | 52% |
| Rs 75,000 to Rs 99,999 | 27 | 22% |
| Rs 100,000 and above | 9 | 7% |
Prices by Brand
Brand is the single largest determinant of price. Guess sits lowest, Tory Burch highest, with Michael Kors and Longchamp occupying the volume middle of the Sri Lankan market.
| Brand | Bags | Lowest | Median | Highest |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Guess | 13 | Rs 30,000 | Rs 42,000 | Rs 55,000 |
| Longchamp | 24 | Rs 32,000 | Rs 60,000 | Rs 85,000 |
| Michael Kors | 56 | Rs 40,000 | Rs 60,000 | Rs 105,000 |
| Kate Spade | 8 | Rs 48,000 | Rs 75,000 | Rs 95,000 |
| Coach | 18 | Rs 60,000 | Rs 85,000 | Rs 130,000 |
| Tory Burch | 4 | Rs 100,000 | Rs 110,000 | Rs 140,000 |
Michael Kors and Coach are frequently treated as interchangeable in Sri Lanka. They are not. The median Coach bag costs Rs 25,000 more than the median Michael Kors bag, and the cheapest Coach handbag in stock is Rs 60,000, which is above the Michael Kors median.
Prices by Style
Style matters less than brand, but the pattern is consistent: small crossbody and camera bags are the entry point, structured leather totes and satchels the ceiling.
| Style | Range |
|---|---|
| Crossbody bags | Rs 15,000 to Rs 88,000 |
| Tote bags | Rs 36,000 to Rs 140,000 |
| Shoulder bags | Rs 50,000 to Rs 108,000 |
| Satchels and top handles | Rs 55,000 to Rs 85,000 |
What Drives the Price
Four factors account for most of the variation between two bags from the same brand:
- Material. Coated canvas and signature-logo PVC sit at the bottom. Pebbled and saffiano leather sit at the top, typically a Rs 15,000 to Rs 25,000 step up for an otherwise comparable bag.
- Size. Within a single line, moving from small to large usually adds Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000.
- Construction. Structured bags with rigid bases and lined interiors cost more than unstructured nylon or foldable designs.
- Hardware and embellishment. Pave settings, chain straps and two-tone hardware add cost without changing the bag's capacity.
Methodology
This index covers 124 women's handbags held as live retail stock by Brands Central in Sri Lanka on the date shown above. Figures are retail prices in Sri Lankan rupees, inclusive of duty and local taxes, as advertised to consumers. Where a bag has multiple variants, the lowest variant price is used. Non-bag accessories, dust bags, bag charms and men's bags are excluded.
Because the index reflects one retailer's stock rather than the whole market, it should be read as indicative of the mid-to-premium branded segment in Sri Lanka, not of luxury houses such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel or Gucci, which are not sold through authorised local retail. Prices move with import duty, exchange rates and shipment timing, which is why the index is republished quarterly rather than left static.
